Boney M., the Euro disco group, included the track on their debut album “Take the Heat off Me” in 1976, with production by Frank Farian and arrangement by Stefan Klinkhammer in a Euro-disco style. After the success of “Daddy Cool”, “Sunny” rose to the top of the German charts and made it to the top ten in various other countries.
The flip side of the single featured “New York City”, a revamped version of Gilla’s 1976 hit “Tu es!” and its English variant “Why Don’t You Do It”, which borrowed the intro from Boney M.’s “Help Help”. In some regions, this was released instead of “Baby Do You Wanna Bump” on “Take the Heat off Me”.
Throughout 1988, 1999, 2000, and 2015, the track underwent remixes and re-releases, getting sampled by Mark Ronson in 2003 for “Ooh Wee” and by Boogie Pimps in 2004. While Liz Mitchell handled the original vocals for Boney M., Maizie Williams, an original member, recorded a solo rendition in 2006. The initial version was also part of the Umbrella Academy season 2 soundtrack, with the 2000 remix featured on Boney M.’s remix compilation “20th Century Hits.”
